Advancing Conservatism on Campus at UW-Madison
Why it's time for a right-of-center student publication
The University of Wisconsin-Madison claims to have a mission of fostering “the free exchange of ideas through open dialogue, free inquiry, and healthy and robust debate.”
Despite this, both the university’s administration and the campus community have shown that their commitment to “the free exchange of ideas” rarely matters when it comes to views that push back against their leftist doctrines.
The university’s failure to support differing opinions has been apparent on numerous occasions. For example, UW-Madison has historically created roadblocks for the school’s Young Americans for Freedom chapter, most recently attempting to charge the group unprecedented security fees for hosting a conservative speaker.
Moreover, the university lost one of its few conservative professors, Ryan Owens, last year. In an interview after his departure, he said that UW-Madison is a “toxic environment for conservatives” and that “there is not enough intellectual or ideological diversity on campus.”
Meanwhile, leftist radicals have been allowed to bully the school into submission. Earlier this year, an anti-Israel encampment, which was ripe with antisemitism and pro-terrorism rhetoric, was allowed to stand for more than a week on university property. Some of the students involved were given a slap on the wrist, but the administration still negotiated with organizers.
The university’s major student publications do good journalism, but they have occasionally failed to hold the school accountable for its left-wing excesses. Additionally, organizations like YAF and the College Republicans of UW-Madison provide a community for conservative students but generally cannot change the campus environment as a whole.
The Madison Federalist will address both of these problems and fill the void of conservative student journalism at UW-Madison. We strive to promote individual freedom, traditional values, and the right to life, while also upholding an unwavering commitment to report the truth.
